Chapter Nineteen

Adaline took her father’s pipe from the drawer beside the bed and set it gently in a stack of keepsakes she’d take to Logan Meadows. The scent of tobacco lingered, even though he hadn’t smoked for more than six months. She remembered sitting in his lap as a little girl, looking at the black print on white paper as he read the newspaper after a long day. She blinked away a stab of pain. He was gone.

Courtney glanced her way. “I love the smell of his pipe.”

Her throat feeling tight, she nodded. “I know. I do too.”

She and Courtney had been packing all day. Knowing everything couldn’t come along, Adaline had obtained several large crates from Mrs. Bennett, who’d also lent her Freddy to help for the day after school, since they’d suspended his tutoring sessions. Adaline thought the gesture exceedingly generous of her former boss. Adaline had given notice, telling her employer she’d need to leave with Jake whenever they were ready to travel. She wasn’t certain of the date.

“What should I do with Papa’s clothes?” Courtney asked, gazing in her father’s wardrobe with a woeful expression pulling her face. Her nose, a strawberry red from all her tears, accented her wobbly voice.

Her little sister was not taking the last few days well. Thankfully, Wil Lemon had stayed away since the funeral, giving Adaline time to convince her sister that going to Logan Meadows was the best thing for both of them. A new town. A fresh start. As well as a brother they’d both just met.

Their father had wanted them to be a family, so Adaline couldn’t go without Courtney. Still, as much as Adaline persuaded, she was uncertain of her sister’s feelings. When the time came to step onto the train, she didn’t know what Courtney would do. Going meant leaving Wil Lemon behind.

“Fold them nicely and put them into the trunk for the poor. Someone will be happy to get them, I’m sure.”

A loud crash resonated up the stairs. Freddy was helping Mrs. Torry sort out the kitchen. The boy hadn’t been overly excited when he’d been told what his job would be, but he’d dug in when asked. Perhaps some of the lessons she’d given him on duty had sunken in.

Courtney’s head whipped toward the door. “Oh! I wonder what precious keepsake is now in a hundred pieces? I hate to think of all the things we’re leaving behind.”

Adaline put an arm around her sister’s shoulder. “Mrs. Torry was nice to offer to let us store a few boxes at her house. With the cost of shipping, we can’t take much now, but perhaps when we find work in Logan Meadows, that will be different. This gives us a little time. As well as Mrs. Bennett offering to sell what she could in the mercantile, for a percentage of the profit. The rest we’ll give away. You’ll see. Once the belongings are gone, you won’t miss them.” She put on a brave face for her sister.
